Surveillance, investigation, evidence, individual, investigator

During a surveillance investigation, it is not uncommon for an investigator to conduct multiple types of surveillance to complete the investigation thoroughly.

For example, An investigator may set up stationary surveillance to observe an individual’s residence. In doing so, the investigator notices the individual is about to leave the home. Following the person of interest would then result in mobile surveillance. Suppose the person of interest went into a mall; the investigator would then covertly follow the individual into the mall on foot or undercover. Thus, three types of surveillance were conducted in one investigation.

Surveillance is defined as closely observing an individual, group, business, or residence’s activities. This can be conducted in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Social Media/Online Surveillance
    • This type of surveillance is conducted by closely observing an individual’s social media/online usage.
  • Mobile Surveillance
    • Mobile surveillance is the type of traditional surveillance in which a private investigator follows an individual around covertly observing their daily activities.
  • Stationary/Fixed Surveillance
    • Stationary or fixed surveillance is when a private investigator sets up their monitoring equipment in a fixed location for a set period of time to observe a residential or commercial location.
  • On-Foot/Undercover Surveillance
    • This type of surveillance is when the private investigator covertly follows the individual on foot to observe their actions.
  • Counter Surveillance
    • Counter surveillance is a type of surveillance whose objective is to determine whether or not someone is being surveilled. Counter surveillance includes various methods to thwart or detect surveillance.
  • GPS Tracking
    • GPS tracking is a type of surveillance that uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking device to determine a vehicle’s precise location in real-time. Trackers also monitor and save data on where the vehicle has been during a given time period.

In the world of private investigations, surveillance is a common method of gathering information for a case. The plethora of information that can come from surveillance is unmatched in some cases.

The plethora of valuable information and evidence that can be gathered from surveillance is the reason it is a common tool investigators use. Additionally, evidence gathered from surveillance investigations is admissible in court when conducted legally and ethically with a proper chain of custody. This type of hard evidence can make a significant impact on your case.

Evidence and/or information gathered from surveillance may include:

  • Audio Recordings
  • Video & Photographic Evidence
  • Social Media Evidence
  • Counter Intelligence
  • Timeline of an Individual’s Activities
  • Proof of Drug Use
